Sunday/Monday, June 21–22, 2026 — how the weekend actually landed
A low-ceiling weekend on paper — the market overruled us
Our hype index had nothing above “moderate” heading in. Then Cocktail 2 opened above the top of our range and built to ~₹43 Cr, and Maa Inti Bangaaram — a film we never tracked — became the second-biggest in the country. The two calls we got most wrong are the two we're happiest to own. Here's the grade, film by film.

Weekend net (Fri→Sun running), India all-languages, ₹ Cr, per Boxoffy admin. “Our call” = BCM 3-day projection / hype-index implied range. ◆ Off-radar = the model didn't carry the title — a tracking gap on us, graded honestly. Sunday figures still settling.
The miss we're happiest to own
Cocktail 2 — implied ₹10–22 Cr, actual ₹43.3 Cr. We read the 13-year franchise gap and the recast ensemble as risk and capped the ceiling at a ₹12.6 Cr Day 1. It opened above that on day one and built to the biggest Hindi rom-com weekend in years. The lesson logged: brand-franchise nostalgia plus a clean solo release beats the recast discount we applied.
The breakouts we never tracked
- Maa Inti Bangaaram — off-radar → ₹23.10 Cr, #2 in India. Our index simply didn't carry Samantha's comeback. It grew 40% on Saturday and posted the second-biggest opening weekend ever for a female solo-led South Indian film. We don't get to claim a call we never made — we're flagging the blind spot instead.
- Obsession — ₹3–6 → ~₹10 Cr (Week 4). We penciled it to fade for the third week running. It posted a 100%+ Saturday jump back in week two and is now the 3rd-biggest Hollywood horror ever in India (~₹70 Cr net). We keep modeling horror legs like regular drama; we keep being wrong.
On the money
Peddi faded to ~₹5.5 Cr in its third weekend, square in our ₹5–7 band — but the verdict, not the number, is the story: a ₹308 Cr worldwide gross on a ₹350 Cr budget makes it the year's top South grosser and a film still chasing break-even, so we're holding it at Plus. Haunted 3D and Disclosure Day both landed inside their W2 bands. Toy Story 5 is the only clean miss — and a telling one.
What it means
Two debuts, both under-modeled, defined the frame — and the model's blind spots rhyme with last week's: too cautious on a nostalgia franchise, completely missing a female-led southern opener, still under-calling Obsession's legs. The recalibration we're feeding back: in a soft-looking weekend, demand doesn't disappear — it concentrates on whatever actually has a hook, and our job is to stop discounting the hooks we don't have a comp for.
June 19–21 was supposed to be a bridge weekend. Our hype index had nothing above “moderate,” and the calendar read like a holding pattern between tentpoles. Instead, Cocktail 2 turned the urban multiplex into a rom-com event, Samantha's Maa Inti Bangaaram rewrote what a female-led southern opener can do, and a $750K Hollywood horror kept printing money a month into its run. When you publish a preview, the honest thing is to come back and mark it — so here's the board, and the grade.

The split-screen storyToy Story 5 posted Pixar's second-best global opening ever ($312M worldwide) and was the #1 or #1-non-local film in nearly every major market on earth — except India, where a ₹110 Cr Hindi rom-com out-grossed it on home turf. India remains the Pixar-proof market, and Cocktail 2 was the reason this weekend.
What the timeline said 📣
Cocktail 2 rode the loudest social wave of the weekend. The Twitter review round-ups landed mixed-to-positive on the screenplay but near-unanimous on the soundtrack and the Shahid–Kriti–Rashmika chemistry, and the trade framing — “biggest Bollywood rom-com opening in years” — did its own promotional work as the numbers leaked through Saturday. The conversation was less “is it good” and more “is Bollywood's rom-com lane back.”
Boxoffy Take · Maa Inti BangaaramSamantha posted publicly after the opening, crediting female audiences for the result — calling it humbling to see a film embraced “irrespective of whether it is male-led or female-led,” and singling out women driving the day-one turnout. That post became the weekend's defining storyline on Indian film social media: the “female-led films can open” argument, backed by a real ₹23 Cr number.
Facebook fan communities in the Telugu belt drove the Saturday surge that took Maa Inti Bangaaram to ₹23 Cr, and the second-day growth — rare for any opener — was the proof point doing the rounds. Obsession's chatter stayed where it's been for a month: disbelief at the legs, with the “$750K budget” line attached to nearly every post about it.
Below the line — and out to OTT ↗
Two kinds of exit this frame. The fades — Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai (~₹1.8 Cr, W3, cume ₹50 Cr), Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata and Governor: The Silent Saviour (~₹0.6 Cr each, both Jun 12 Hindi Disasters) — and the films that simply finished their run and moved to streaming.
Karuppu (→ Prime Video, Jun 12) closes at ₹193.4 Cr net / ₹304 Cr WW, Suriya's biggest ever. Drishyam 3 (→ Prime Video, Jun 18) exits at ~₹106 Cr net / ~₹238 Cr WW. Neither falls out of the chart because it faltered — they leave it as winners, two of the year's biggest South grossers handing off to streaming. Their theatrical story is finished; the chart just follows them out the door.
We'll be back next weekend with the next preview — and the grade on every call above, including whether the model finally stops discounting the hooks it can't comp.
