After a Peddi-dominated opening week, the board doesn't just reset — it overloads. June 12 is the most crowded movie Friday of the year so far: nine films open in Indian cinemas at once — four content-driven Hindi releases, Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day, two more Hollywood titles and a pair of regional films — landing on top of holdovers Peddi and Obsession that still command screens. Below: what opens, what holds, what streams, the screen-shock math, and the BCM-projected India and US Top 10s. As always, the projections are ours to be graded on next week.
🇮🇳 India — what opens
Main Vaapas Aaunga is the marquee Hindi arrival — an Imtiaz Ali period romantic drama starring Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina and Sharvari, scored by A.R. Rahman. It's a multiplex-and-metros play: a director with a devoted following, a star riding real cross-over heat, and a soundtrack doing the pre-release work. The question isn't whether it opens — it's whether Imtiaz Ali's deliberate, mood-first storytelling converts Diljit's music-driven popularity into Friday footfalls.
But it isn't alone — three more Hindi films land the same day. Bharat Bhagya Vidhata puts Kangana Ranaut in a true-story drama about the nurses and hospital staff who shielded patients at Cama Hospital during the 2008 Mumbai attacks; made lean at a reported ₹35–45 Cr, it's an emotional, word-of-mouth play rather than an opening-weekend one. Governor: The Silent Saviour is a financial-political thriller with Manoj Bajpayee, Adah Sharma and Pankaj Tripathi, dramatising the 1991 economic crisis from the RBI Governor's chair (Amit Trivedi on score) — a topical, urban-multiplex proposition that lives on reviews.
Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past revives Vikram Bhatt's horror franchise — low budget, single-screen and tier-2 friendly, multilingual, rarely a multiplex event. It counter-programs cleanly against the three content dramas rather than competing head-on.
🇮🇳 India — what holds
Peddi enters week two off a ₹187.25 Cr first-week India net (worldwide gross past ₹277 Cr), having overtaken Bhooth Bangla's lifetime in seven days. The weekday slide was steep — ₹12.35 Cr Monday to ₹7.55 Cr Wednesday — so the second weekend is the real legs test. A hold in the ₹10–14 Cr range keeps its ₹250 Cr+ India target alive; anything softer and the mixed word-of-mouth has caught up with it.
Obsession is the story of the season. The sub-$1M horror has crossed ₹47 Cr gross in India and just posted a second weekend (₹17.55 Cr net) that nearly matched its entire first week — a word-of-mouth surge almost unheard of for non-franchise horror. Worldwide it's past $200M, now Focus Features' highest-grossing film ever. Into its third India weekend, it's the holdover we'd least bet against.
Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai closed week one at ₹36.34 Cr — ahead of Baby John but short of Sunny Sanskari, and squarely a disappointment. With Main Vaapas Aaunga taking its urban screens, week two will fade fast. Drishyam 3, Karuppu and the regional holdovers continue their long tails.
Hype Index — the new releases
Before a single ticket is torn, BCM can't truly model a cold opening — it's a recalibration engine that needs a Day-1 anchor. So we score the buzz instead. The Hype Index is a 0–100 composite of six pre-release signals — advance momentum, music/trailer buzz, star pull, genre fit, screen share, legs potential — which BCM then maps to an opening range. All four June 12 Hindi releases land low, and all are flagged low-confidence.
The big number is the opening-weekend call; the small score is the Hype Index (0–100). Pre-release, comparable-driven — no Day-1 anchor yet.
Main Vaapas Aaunga is the higher score, but it's a legs play, not a front-loaded one. Trade pegs its Day 1 as low as ₹2.5–4.5 Cr — potentially Imtiaz Ali's softest opening in 12 years — with the Rahman soundtrack and the trailer landing below his usual standard. The ₹10–12 Cr weekend assumes word-of-mouth rescues Saturday and Sunday; if reviews come in middling, it's nearer ₹8 Cr. Governor (Manoj Bajpayee) and Bharat Bhagya Vidhata (Kangana Ranaut) are both content-and-review-driven dramas that tend to build through the weekend rather than front-load, so their bands are wide and word-of-mouth-gated. Haunted 3D is pure Vikram Bhatt counter-programming — built-in horror audience, 3D, multilingual — but no star draw and the genre's familiar absence of legs. The throughline: four Hindi films, no mass opener among them, all splitting one content audience.

🇺🇸 US — what opens & holds
Disclosure Day (Universal) is the weekend's event — a Steven Spielberg sci-fi adventure tracking for a $40–50M opening per the Boxoffice Pro Podium, comfortably the #1 debut. Spielberg plus an original summer sci-fi swing is exactly the kind of four-quadrant play June lives for.
Behind it, last week's chart compresses. Scary Movie banks its franchise-record $55M open but takes the standard parody-sequel weekday hit into a ~55% second-weekend drop. Masters of the Universe keeps sliding on its ₹170M-budget math. And again, Obsession — whose fourth US weekend fell just 7% to $25.6M — refuses to behave like a normal release, and should out-hold most of the field.

OTT Watch — what's dropping
Two big India drops land Friday. Bhooth Bangla — Priyadarshan's Akshay Kumar horror-comedy that earned ₹242.85 Cr worldwide theatrically — arrives on Netflix, the kind of broad-appeal title that tends to park near the top of the India streaming charts on day one. And Raakh, the Ali Fazal and Sonali Bendre crime thriller series inspired by Delhi's 1978 Ranga–Billa case, premieres on Amazon Prime Video — the marquee originals drop of the week.
An honest note on the numbers: both land as this preview publishes, so there's no watch-time yet — and unlike the US, Indian platforms don't release Nielsen-style minutes-viewed. We track India OTT through FlixPatrol and Ormax positioning, and US titles through Nielsen's weekly minutes chart. What we'll be watching next week: whether Bhooth Bangla opens at India #1 on Netflix (its theatrical run says it should), and whether Raakh has the legs to hold across a week the way a true-crime hook usually delivers. Hype Index — OTT openings
On the watch-time question, here's the honest version: minutes-viewed is a Nielsen US-panel metric and won't meaningfully register Hindi titles, so we won't fake a number. For Bhooth Bangla, the comparable public metric is Netflix's own weekly views/hours — and a ₹242-crore theatrical hit with Akshay Kumar should open at India #1 and is a genuine candidate for Netflix's Global Top 10 (Non-English Films) in week one. For Raakh, Prime publishes no hours at all, so we track FlixPatrol and Ormax rank — and a true-crime hook with Ali Fazal typically opens #1 on Prime India and builds across the week rather than front-loading. The real figures go in Monday's recap.
