Hanuman Ansh has crossed ₹100 crore on a ₹2 crore budget.
₹101.38 crore net in India through day 30. Against a production cost of ₹2 crore, that is a return of 51 times — and it is still climbing. Written and directed by Vishal Chaturvedi, a practising doctor before he was a filmmaker, and produced by Swambhu Media Network. The film covers the life of Lakshman Das and his transformation into Neem Karoli Baba.
How it got here
*Friday and Saturday are actuals; Sunday is projected at ₹20 Cr. The ₹101.38 Cr cumulative below is sourced through day 30, Saturday — it does not include the projected Sunday.
Week two took ₹39 lakh and screens fell from around 200 to about 40, at which point the film was effectively finished. Then week three did ₹10.40 crore — a 2,567% jump — and week four did ₹61 crore.
This weekend it took ₹11.80 crore on Friday and ₹18.28 crore on Saturday — the biggest single day of its run, on day thirty. Sunday had ₹5.19 crore of gross already booked in advance across 187,018 tickets, 6,174 shows and 1,565 theatres.
Toxic opened at ₹101 crore. It is now on 2,253 shows.
Yash's first film since KGF: Chapter 2 opened on 26 August across a reported 12,000 screens worldwide in six languages, and took ₹101.10 crore India net on day one — the biggest opening day of 2026.
It finished five days on ₹214.10 crore India net and ₹285.20 crore worldwide, which against a reported budget of ₹600–800 crore works out at roughly 0.31×. Its show count went from 24,579 on day one to 2,253 by day ten, a 91% cut in nine days.
The language split shows where it broke. Kannada held 58.1% occupancy on 7,415 shows while Hindi held 31.7% on 68,839 — nine times the screens for two and a half times the money.
Mirzapur just proved a streaming series can open a film.
₹92.75 crore across three days. Excel Entertainment and Amazon MGM Studios took a web series that has been free on Prime Video since 2018, put it in cinemas, and produced the biggest opening in Excel's twenty-five-year history.
Saturday grew 24% on Friday — and Friday was a public holiday, so the like-for-like growth is nearer 60%. Films that open on a holiday and then grow are rare; it usually works the other way.
It is Excel's biggest opening day, by a whisker
| Film | Year | Opening day | What it had |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mirzapur: The Movie | 2026 | ₹25.75 Cr | Pankaj Tripathi, a web series |
| Gold | 2018 | ₹25.25 Cr | Akshay Kumar, Independence Day |
| Raees | 2017 | ₹20.42 Cr | Shah Rukh Khan, Republic Day |
| Gully Boy | 2019 | ₹19.40 Cr | Ranveer, Alia, Valentine's, Oscar entry |
Every film above it needed a star and a holiday. Mirzapur had Pankaj Tripathi and an ordinary Friday — and Raees and Don 2 were both Red Chillies co-productions, which is to say Excel needed Shah Rukh on the poster to get near this number before.
The economics, and the blockbuster question
Against a ₹90 crore budget and a break-even near ₹95 crore, the film recovered 98% of its cost in three days. Pinkvilla has already called it a Super Hit.
Blockbuster for a ₹90 crore Hindi film means roughly ₹200 crore India net. On a ₹140–150 crore first week — which the current trajectory supports — it needs ₹50–60 crore more across the rest of the run. With no major Hindi release until Practical Magic 2 territory and a full clear fortnight ahead, that is a comfortable ask rather than a stretch.
Why this matters beyond one film
The argument against putting a streaming series in cinemas has always been simple: the audience already watches it free at home, and it returns to the platform in eight weeks. Mirzapur answered that with the second-biggest opening day in Hindi cinema this year.
There is a second effect visible in our streaming index below. Mirzapur's three seasons re-entered the top twenty the week the film opened, which means Amazon got a theatrical marketing campaign that paid for itself and drove subscribers back into a nine-year-old library at the same time.
Every streamer in India will have read this weekend's numbers. Panchayat, The Family Man, Scam 1992, Farzi, Delhi Crime — each has a case now that did not exist on Thursday.

The two films at the top are opposites. Mirzapur is a ₹90 crore studio release recovering its cost in three days. Hanuman Ansh is a ₹2 crore film in its fifth week taking 54% of what a debut is taking. Between them they are 69% of the entire board.
Three films, fifty-one years, one pattern.
This has happened twice before, and both times it produced a record that still stands. Hanuman Ansh is the third film to run the same curve, and it is running it faster than either of them did.
| Film | Year · Language | Budget | India net | Adjusted | Return |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jai Santoshi Maa | 1975 · Hindi | ₹0.25 Cr | ₹5.00 Cr | ₹148.34 Cr | 20× |
| Laalo: Krishna Sada Sahaayate | 2025 · Gujarati | ₹0.50 Cr | ₹120 Cr WW | ₹120 Cr | 240× |
| Hanuman Ansh | 2026 · Hindi | ₹2.00 Cr | ₹101.38 Cr | ₹101.38 Cr | 51× |
Jai Santoshi Maa, 1975
Vijay Sharma's devotional took ₹5 crore on a ₹25 lakh budget and finished as the second-highest grossing Hindi film of 1975, in a year that also produced Sholay and Deewaar. Audiences removed their footwear at cinema doors and threw flowers and coins at the screen. Box Office India puts its inflation-adjusted gross at ₹148.34 crore — which, in real terms, is still the biggest devotional film India has produced.
Adjusted at that multiplier, Jai Santoshi Maa cost ₹7.42 crore in today's money — nearly four times what Hanuman Ansh cost. The 2026 film is the cheaper of the two.
Laalo, 2025
Ten months ago a Gujarati devotional drama opened on a ₹50 lakh budget and took ₹1.50 crore across three weeks. Then week four turned. By week six it was taking more in seven days than in its entire first three weeks. Its seventh week brought ₹17.50 crore — the second-biggest seventh week any Indian film has recorded, ahead of Baahubali 2 and Pushpa 2. It was still doing over a crore in week eleven and finished at ₹120 crore worldwide, 240 times its cost.
Where Hanuman Ansh sits
It turned a week earlier than Laalo and off a base seven times larger. To match Jai Santoshi Maa in inflation-adjusted terms it needs ₹148.34 crore, which is 46% above where it stands. On Laalo's shape — peaking around week six and running past day 75 — that is reachable but not likely, because Laalo had Gujarati cinema entirely to itself and Hanuman Ansh has Mirzapur beside it.
The honest note: nobody models this category, and that includes us. We called Irumudi at ₹14–24 crore for its opening weekend and it did ₹51.5 crore. We had Hanuman Ansh's fifth weekend at ₹15.50 crore two days ago; it did ₹50.08. Both misses came from the same blind spot — devotional and faith-led subjects behave nothing like the star-vehicle comparables our model is built on.
Dhamaal 4 lands on Netflix. The week's OTT slate.
The window is the number worth watching. Dhamaal 4 took 56 days. Mirzapur: The Movie has an eight-week window and hits Prime Video in late October. Toxic's window puts it on streaming in the same corridor. For a film returning 0.31× theatrically, that streaming date now matters more to its economics than anything left in cinemas.
Cross-platform Top 20 · week ending 6 September
India publishes no equivalent of Nielsen's minutes chart. Ormax reports viewership in millions of viewers, quarterly and annually, not weekly. BARC's television ratings have been suspended since July. There is no public weekly streaming currency in this market.
So we built one. The Boxoffy Streaming Index models watch-minutes from platform trending position, title runtime, theatrical performance where applicable, release recency and search interest. It is a model, not a measurement, and every figure below should be read that way.

Row 16 is the one to look at. Mirzapur's three seasons are back in the top twenty, and none of them is new. A nine-year-old library climbed the chart because a film opened in cinemas four days ago.
The questions people are asking.
₹101.38 crore net in India through day 30, against a ₹2 crore budget — a return of 51 times. It is the most profitable Indian film of 2026.
The life of Lakshman Das and his transformation into Neem Karoli Baba. Written and directed by Vishal Chaturvedi, produced by Swambhu Media Network, released 7 August 2026 in Hindi.
₹92.75 crore India net across Friday to Sunday — ₹25.75 crore Friday, ₹32 crore Saturday, ₹35 crore Sunday projected. Excel Entertainment's biggest opening.
On the numbers, yes. ₹214.10 crore India net in five days and ₹285.20 crore worldwide against a reported ₹600–800 crore budget is a return of roughly 0.31 times. Its show count fell 91% in nine days.
Adjusted for inflation, Jai Santoshi Maa (1975) at ₹148.34 crore. In nominal terms, Laalo (2025) at ₹120 crore worldwide. Hanuman Ansh is at ₹101.38 crore and still running.
4 September 2026 on Netflix, 56 days after its 10 July theatrical release. It grossed ₹224.58 crore worldwide in cinemas.
What to watch.
Friday brings Hanuman Ansh's worldwide release through Hombale Films. A film at ₹101 crore net domestically with zero overseas footprint, handed to the studio that built KGF and Kantara into global properties. Whatever it does abroad is entirely additive.
For Mirzapur, week two against no major new release is the test of whether a streaming property's theatrical audience is a one-weekend event or a run. And for Toxic, the question stopped being how big the opening was some time ago.
