Weekend Recap · 9–11 October 2026

Drishyam Needs One More Weekend For 400. The Industry Has Already Got Something Better.

Drishyam: The Conclusion took ₹63.50 crore in its second weekend and sits at ₹315.25 crore. Four hundred is still possible, but only on one condition. Meanwhile a film on day 67 has no streaming deal at all and is refusing to sign one, a Kannada village drama has turned ₹9 lakh into ₹53 crore, and India has quietly passed the whole of last January–September with a month to spare.

The weekend, in one line

Drishyam: The Conclusion did ₹63.50 crore from Friday to Sunday — ₹14.50, ₹26.50, ₹22.50 — against ₹176.50 crore on its opening weekend. That is a fall of 64%.

A 64% second weekend is steep. But the number that decides this film's final total is not the one it just posted. It is the one it posts on 18 October.

Worldwide it is at ₹489.74 crore — ₹378.24 crore gross in India and ₹111.50 crore overseas. That makes it the second biggest Indian film of 2026 anywhere in the world, behind only Dhurandhar 2.

Mumbai has crossed ₹110 crore, only the third Ajay Devgn film to pass ₹100 crore in that circuit after Tanhaji and Singham Again. Delhi and UP were heading to ₹70 crore by Monday, already his best ever there, inside a week. The pattern is a north Indian and big city one — the mass circuits have done noticeably less, which the trade puts down to a film with little action and almost no music.

What 400 crore actually needs

The film is at ₹315.25 crore. Four hundred is ₹84.75 crore away. Here is where that has to come from.

First, the rest of this week

Monday came in at ₹6.25 crore, from 13,605 shows that were 11% full. The first Monday was ₹21.00 crore from 16,274 shows. So the audience has fallen 70% while the number of shows has come down only 16%. The screens are still there. The people are not.

In week one, Tuesday held 93% of Monday, Wednesday 74% and Thursday 62%. Apply the same shape and the rest of this week looks like ₹5.80, ₹4.60 and ₹3.90 — a second week of about ₹84 crore, and a running total near ₹330 crore by Thursday night.

Then the third weekend, which decides it

From ₹330 crore the film needs ₹70 crore across its entire remaining run, and almost all of it rests on what it does over 16–18 October. Four versions of that weekend, and where each one finishes.

₹22.2 cr65%30.011.410.3381.2
Our projection, not a reported figure. It assumes weekdays run at about a third of the weekend before them, which is what this film has done twice already.
So the ask is specific. Drishyam needs a third weekend of about ₹35 crore — a fall of only 45%, when it has just fallen 64% — and it needs it in the week Jailer 2 opens. On a more ordinary fall of 55 to 60% it finishes between ₹375 and ₹390 crore.

Which is why our own call moves. We had ₹380–420 crore. The top of that range needed a third weekend this film is unlikely to post against Jailer 2, so we are cutting it.

Declare it: old → new

Old: ₹380–420 crore nett.
New: ₹375–395 crore nett, with 400 alive only on a third weekend at or above ₹33 crore.

We are cutting the ceiling by ₹25 crore and the floor by ₹5 crore, and the reason is the weekdays rather than the weekend. A film that needs ₹85 crore more does not get it from houses that are 11% full.

The competition, and a twist

Jailer 2 opens on Thursday 15 October in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada. On the face of it, that is the thing that ends Drishyam's run.

Except its Hindi version is reported to be missing PVR INOX and Cinepolis, because the four weeks it wants between cinemas and streaming falls short of the eight weeks those chains ask for on Hindi films. If that holds, the Hindi version goes mostly to single screens — and Drishyam keeps the multiplexes in Mumbai and Delhi, which is exactly where it is still earning. UNCONFIRMED Nobody official has commented and no screen numbers have been given.

One rival has already moved out of the way: Dhanush and Mammootty's Om was pushed back from 16 October to give Jailer 2 room.

The ₹300 crore club, in full

On Sunday we called Drishyam the 18th Hindi film to do ₹300 crore. That needs a word of explanation, because the answer depends on what you count.

If you count only films originally made in Hindi, it is the 18th to get there. If you also count the big South Indian films in their Hindi versions — Baahubali 2, KGF 2, Pushpa 2 — as the list below does, it is the 20th. Either way it is in, and either way it is still climbing.

BCM 12, India nett in ₹ crore. For a film dubbed from another language this counts the Hindi version only, not the all-India total. Two more sit right on the line and we have left both out — War and Padmaavat, each within a few crore of ₹300.

One caveat on four of these

Dhurandhar, Chhaava, Saiyaara and Border 2 were all still playing when their last figure was recorded, so each finished a little above what it shows here, and their order among themselves is not settled.

Hanuman Ansh is now an anomaly, and the interesting part is what it has not signed

Day 67. Still in cinemas. ₹335.73 crore in India on a budget of about ₹2 crore.

The run is the thing, week by week:

India nett, ₹ crore, BCM 12.

A film that took ₹40 lakh in its second week took ₹90 crore in its fifth. Its fifth Friday of ₹9 crore is the biggest fifth Friday any Indian film has ever had. No Indian film had previously taken ₹50 crore in a fifth week; this one took ninety. It beat Dhurandhar's record for a Hindi fifth week in three days.

Two corrections on this film

We have published "157 times its budget". We are withdrawing it. We cannot find a source for it, and the arithmetic suggests somebody divided a figure from around day 60 by ₹2 crore. On today's number the same sum gives 168 times. Counting the ₹1 crore spent on prints and marketing as well, it is 112 times. The more meaningful measure is what the producers actually keep from ticket sales, which is roughly 25 times the budget — believed to be the best return any Indian film has had from cinemas.

It is no longer only a Hindi film. A Telugu version released on 9 October, and on day 67 the Telugu version took ₹0.85 crore against the Hindi original's ₹0.40 crore. The dub is now out-earning the original, and anybody arguing about this film's staying power has to account for that.

The streaming deal that does not exist

This is the part worth sitting with. On day 67, Hanuman Ansh has no streaming deal. No platform has been announced. Every tracker lists its digital release as unavailable.

A figure of ₹100 crore has been going round since the middle of September, attributed to a platform nobody will name, in reports whose own wording is "word is" and "the buzz is". NOBODY HAS PUT THEIR NAME TO IT

Against that, here is what is on the record. Producer Ragini Sona has said an offer of that size "is definitely not there." She confirmed offers are coming in but would not put a number on any of them. She said the decision rests with the director, Vishal Chaturvedi, and that she supports his wish to wait. A deal will come "very soon," she said, but "not immediately." The team is reportedly holding out for a 100-day run in cinemas first, which would take them to about 14 November. ON RECORD

So the honest answer is that there was never a deal to renegotiate. A ₹2 crore film on 250 screens had nobody willing to guarantee it anything, and 67 days later it still has no deal — this time by choice. The only large number in the story is the one nobody will attach their name to, and the producer has denied it.

That says more about how Indian streaming now buys films than any figure would. Platforms have stopped paying before release and started waiting to see what happens in cinemas. Usually that leaves the producer exposed. Here it has handed one all the leverage, because what happened in cinemas was ₹335 crore.

Premada Oorali: ₹9 lakh to ₹53 crore

A Kannada village drama opened on 25 September on 60 shows and took ₹9 lakh. Seventeen days later it took ₹8 crore in a day. It is now at ₹52.97 crore.

India nett, ₹ crore, BCM 12. Week three is incomplete.

The detail that matters more than the total: the number of shows grew twenty-one times and the halls got fuller, not emptier. It opened 28% full on 60 shows and was running 83% full on 1,291 shows two and a half weeks later. Demand ran ahead of supply for the whole run. On a reported budget of ₹2.5 crore that is about twenty-one times its money back — though no producer has confirmed a budget.

It did this with no marketing money. The team printed cards that looked like wedding invitations and handed them out on public buses. Word of mouth did the rest, mostly through single screens in smaller towns, while it held its own in Bengaluru against both The Paradise and Drishyam.

Rishab Shetty, who made Kantara, said of it: "Our people have once again proven that they will ensure a good movie succeeds."

Three things to be careful about

It is still only in Kannada — no dubbed version exists, which is the clean contrast with Hanuman Ansh. It is playing in American cinemas, but nobody has published an overseas figure, so we will not call its ₹62 crore a worldwide total. And the comparison the Kannada trade is making is not Kantara or KGF, it is Su From So, last year's Kannada surprise. No streaming deal has been reported, and the lead actor has said the team is "all-in on theatres right now."

The industry is not just richer this year. It has more people in seats.

By the end of August, India had taken ₹9,868 crore at the box office. The whole of January to September last year was ₹9,409 crore. 2026 passed last year's nine-month total with a month to spare.

Ormax Media, in ₹ crore. These are gross figures, which include tax — every film number elsewhere in this piece is nett, which does not. The two are not interchangeable.
Here is the real change. Last year's record ₹13,395 crore came from ticket prices rising 20%, from ₹134 to ₹161, while the number of people buying tickets fell 6%. In the first half of this year that number went up 5% — the first growth in about two and a half years. Last year India charged more for fewer tickets. This year it is selling more tickets.

On the pattern of the last three years, the first half runs at about 42% of the annual total, which would put 2026 above ₹15,000 crore and a billion admissions within reach. The exhibitors agree from their side: PVR INOX's June quarter had admissions up 8%, average ticket price up 8% to ₹273, and a return to profit after a loss a year earlier. Multiplex box office across the industry was up 21% in the first half.

India nett, ₹ crore, BCM 12. For scale, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has taken ₹500.63 crore in India — more than any Indian film this year except Dhurandhar 2.

Two shifts inside that. Hindi has gone from 39% of the year's takings to 44%, while Tamil has dropped from 17% to 12%. And the money is bunching at the top: the fifteen biggest films were 58% of everything collected in the first half, against 49% a year earlier. More films crossed ₹200 crore than last year, and fewer crossed ₹100 crore. The hits got bigger and the middle got thinner.

Streaming

A word of warning before the numbers. No public chart measures every Indian streaming platform the same way. Netflix publishes an order for India but no viewer numbers at all. Prime Video, JioHotstar, Zee5 and SonyLIV publish nothing weekly. The table below comes from a measurement service called COTT, and counts a person once if they watched at least a minute that week.

Bigg Boss at 59 million is the single biggest thing on Indian streaming this week, and it is a television show. Worth remembering every time streaming gets discussed as a film business.

Netflix India, the week to 4 October

Films: Vishwanath & Sons, Irumudi, Modha Rathri, Baby Do Die Do, Romanchakam, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, Lust Stories 3, UNABOMBER, Ohh My Dog, Dhamaal.

Shows: Shaque: Trust No One, The Great Indian Kapil Show season 5, Chumbak, #Love, Papa Yaar by Zakir Khan. Operation Safed Sagar is in its ninth week on the list.

Netflix gives an order for India and nothing else, so its list tells you what was popular within its own catalogue and cannot be set against the numbers above.

One event worth noting just before the weekend: Bethlehem Kudumba Unit arrived on JioHotstar on 2 October in five languages and had the best first day of viewing any film has had on that platform. JioHotstar did not say how much that was.

Music: the biggest film song of the quarter is not from the biggest film

Drishyam: The Conclusion is not charting anywhere. We checked Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music and JioSaavn. Its songs appear on none of them. The album is four tracks and under fifteen minutes. A ₹315 crore film with no hit song is itself worth noticing.

Hanuman Ansh is the opposite. Its soundtrack has passed 100 million streams. The song Parvati has crossed 100 million views on YouTube, topped YouTube Music's weekly chart in India and reached number two worldwide, and has been used in more than 1.5 million short videos. It is number two on YouTube in India and number two on JioSaavn's Hindi chart, with two more of its songs further down the same list.

Grading ourselves

Last night we published a Monday chart built entirely on estimates, because no source had settled Monday yet. It has now settled at ₹6.25 crore. Here is how our three methods did.

Methodwe calledagainst 6.25
Live tracking, converted6.033.5% low
What we published7.0012% high
Last Monday's pattern applied7.9127% high
An unsettled live row8.1330% high

We published a range of ₹6.0 to ₹8.1 and the answer landed at the very bottom of it. Live tracking was the best method by a distance, and the one built from last week's pattern was the worst — the second week running that assuming a normal Monday has sent us too high. Next Monday we lean on the tracking and drop the pattern.

Also carried into this piece: our Drishyam range is cut from ₹380–420 crore to ₹375–395; "157 times its budget" for Hanuman Ansh is withdrawn; and "18th ₹300 crore film" should be read as the 18th to get there among films originally made in Hindi, not the 18th biggest.
