The short version

Six things worth knowing before Friday

  • Jailer 2 closed its day-one advance at Rs 41.48 crore gross on 19.6 lakh tickets across 17,615 shows in 2,742 cinemas and 1,030 cities. 406 shows had every seat gone and another 1,088 were marked housefull by the cinema, all before the first screening.
  • Worldwide it passed Rs 60 crore gross in day-one pre-sales, roughly half of it overseas at $3.1M. North America alone was $1.2M.
  • We are calling Rs 60 crore India net for opening day, band Rs 54-67, and Rs 188 crore across the Thursday-to-Sunday weekend. Rs 200 crore needs day one at Rs 64 crore or better.
  • Three films open on Friday into Jailer 2's second day - Ranabaali, Nayi Naveli and Prahaar - with Crazy Kalyanam the same day and Garividi Lakshmi on Saturday. Five new releases in 48 hours.
  • Ranabaali's advance is 87% block seats. Its real public pre-sale is Rs 11 lakh, not the Rs 86 lakh headline.
  • Drishyam: The Conclusion gets its first real test. It has had the market largely to itself for a fortnight. On Friday it gives up screens to all five.

Jailer 2: the biggest Tamil pre-sale of the year, and what it is not

The final day-one advance, read at 6:00 AM IST on release morning, is Rs 41.48 crore gross including block seats - Rs 37.60 crore without them. That is 19.6 lakh tickets, or 17.94 lakh once the bulk buys come out, at an average ticket of Rs 212.

The four language figures sum to Rs 41.49 crore against a published Rs 41.48 crore - a rounding difference of one lakh, so the split holds.

The line that matters is Hindi. It has 4,504 shows - more than Telugu's 3,237 - and takes Rs 3.9k a show against Tamil's Rs 33.4k. About a ninth, on a comparable number of screens.

Our own sweep found out why

We ran District - the ticketing app we sweep ourselves - across 133 cities on Wednesday evening: 5,429 shows, 671 cinemas, 692,834 seats sold, 44.9% occupancy, Rs 16.68 crore. Of the 1,004 Hindi shows on that read, exactly 2 were in PVR, INOX or Cinepolis. That is 0.2%. The Hindi version has been given a wide release and almost no national multiplex chain.

Worldwide

Day-one pre-sales passed Rs 60 crore gross worldwide on Wednesday morning, split roughly Rs 31 crore India and $3.1M overseas - about Rs 30 crore. Overseas was therefore running level with the home market, which is unusual even for a Rajinikanth film.

TrackTollywood, 14 October 09:00 IST. Gross. India has since risen from Rs 31 Cr to Rs 41.48 Cr, so the worldwide figure is now comfortably past Rs 70 Cr - that last number is our inference, not a published one.

Our opening-day call: Rs 60 crore India net

Rs 60 Cr — band Rs 54-67 crore, India net, all languages. Unchanged from Wednesday night.

We moved this call twice and it ended where it started, which deserves an explanation rather than a victory lap. On Wednesday evening we said Rs 55 crore. We revised to Rs 60 on two arguments: that our advance figure was a midnight snapshot being compared against Coolie's final, and that Jailer 2's advance was far thinner per show than Coolie's, leaving more to sell at the counter.

The first argument was wrong. We predicted the advance would add 10-15% overnight to reach Rs 44-46 crore. It added 2.1%, from Rs 40.10 crore to Rs 41.48 crore. There was no morning surge.

The second was right, and it matters more. Strip the block seats from both films and Jailer 2 has sold more real advance tickets than Coolie did - 17.94 lakh against 17.30 lakh - for 1.4% less money. That gap is the Tamil Nadu ticket price cap and nothing else. Coolie opened to Rs 65 crore net.

The two errors roughly cancel, so Rs 60 crore stands. Count people, not rupees: a Tamil Nadu ticket is capped, so the rupee figure understates how many bodies this film is moving.

Tamil Nadu is 55% of the seats on this read at 65.7% full. The interesting entry is Puducherry at 86.7%, the highest fill rate in the country on a tiny footprint. The Hindi belt is the mirror image: Gujarat 9.7%, Haryana 8.6%, Madhya Pradesh 11.6% - screens allocated, seats unsold.

Counter-programming

Five new releases in 48 hours, and only one of them is counter-programming

Friday brings three wide releases plus a fourth, smaller Telugu title, and a fifth follows on Saturday. Only one of them is really aimed at a different crowd; the rest are chasing the same ticket Jailer 2 already has. And note the calendar: Dussehra itself is Tuesday 20 October, so this is the weekend before the holiday, not the holiday weekend. Everything here is positioned to ride into it. On paper that is a crowded run-up. In the advance data it is not a contest.

Garividi LakshmiTelugu17 Octnot listed——
Advance gross includes block seats. Real occupancy strips them, and for Prahaar and Nayi Naveli also strips five venues whose seat data we know to be unreliable.

Ranabaali: the headline is 87% block seats

Read this before quoting its advance

Ranabaali's day-one advance reads Rs 86 lakh. Excluding block seats it is Rs 11 lakh. That is 87% of the headline bought in bulk - 67,257 tickets become 8,235. Occupancy goes from 22% to 3%.

For scale, Jailer 2's block seats are 9.4% of its headline. Both figures are real money to the exhibitor. Neither is evidence of public demand, and the difference between 9% and 87% is the whole story.

Telugu releases do carry a low advance culture - Jailer (2023) saw only 17.8% of its Telugu day one pre-booked against 36.6% in Tamil - so a thin advance on its own is not damning. But Rs 11 lakh of genuine public pre-sale on 709 shows, for a Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna period epic across five languages, is thinner than that habit alone explains. Its average ticket of Rs 134 is also the lowest on the board.

Prahaar and Nayi Naveli: the same shape, 24 hours apart

Both are Hindi, both built for multiplexes, both with essentially no advance and not one sold-out show between them across 4,420 shows. Nayi Naveli is the wider and cheaper of the two - 2,530 shows at Rs 251 a ticket against 1,890 at Rs 298 - which is what a PVR Inox distribution buys you.

The reversal is worth noting. On the raw numbers Nayi Naveli looks ahead at 2.97% sold to Prahaar's 2.62%. Cleaned of the bad-venue data, it is behind: 1.98% against 2.29%. It wins on footprint, not on demand.

And the one that stings for Prahaar: it is a film about a Mumbai public prosecutor, released with no Marathi version at all, and Maharashtra - its largest state footprint at 71 cinemas - is at 2.6%. Pune, which ought to be the most receptive city in the country for this subject, sits at 1.7% on 106 shows.

A trap other trackers will fall into today

Five single-screen venues sold 34% of every Nayi Naveli ticket in India, on 19 of 2,530 shows, at 63-83% occupancy while the country sits at 2%. Two of them reported exactly the same numbers, seat for seat, for Prahaar - New Kohinoor in Jodhpur at 744 of 1,140 seats for both films, APR in Gaya at 83.5% for both and 85.8% for Jailer 2. Two different films cannot sell the same seats. That is a stale default the app never updated, not real demand. It puts four fake cities at the top of the hot list, and anyone sorting the city column today will publish them.

The incumbent

Drishyam: The Conclusion finally gets tested

It has had an extraordinarily soft run. Released 2 October, it crossed Rs 500 crore worldwide on day 12 - the first Indian film to do so since Dhurandhar: The Revenge in March, 205 days earlier - and it has not faced a single wide release aimed at its audience.

On Friday it is day 15, and it gives up screens to five films at once.

Our District readsShowsCinemasSeatsSoldOccupancy

16 Oct, day 15sweeping tonight————
Boxoffy District sweeps, same method each time, so the three are directly comparable. The show count is the number to watch - screen loss shows up there before it shows up in occupancy.

The honest framing: Drishyam's second weekend fell 64%, to Rs 63.50 crore, which is steep but not alarming for a film of this shape. What decides its final total is not that number. It is the third weekend, this one, with the market's entire remaining appetite pointed at Rajinikanth.

We cut our lifetime range on this film from Rs 380-420 crore to Rs 375-395 crore last weekend, and that cut assumed a third weekend near Rs 35 crore. Our estimate above has it at Rs 10.5 crore for Friday to Sunday. If it lands materially under that, the range needs cutting again.

The extended opening weekend: Thursday to Sunday

Jailer 2 opened on a Thursday, so a Friday-to-Sunday frame would hide its single biggest day and understate every share on the board. This chart runs Thursday 15 to Sunday 18. Carried forward from our own daily national charts, the last of which - Wednesday 14 October - had the entire Indian board at Rs 14.93 crore for the day. Friday alone is 3.7 times that.

EVERY FIGURE IS A BOXOFFY ESTIMATE. India net, Rs crore. Not a report and not a tracker read - a projection built from our own advance sweeps and our daily charts, carried forward from Tuesday 13 October, the last day we have settled. Dashes in the day-count column are films whose release date we have not confirmed; dashes in a day column are films that had not released yet. Crazy Kalyanam just misses the ten at an estimated Rs 2.10 crore. Grade it against Monday's actuals.

Rs 188 Cr — Jailer 2's four-day total on our central call. Band Rs 169-210 crore, and that band is driven by the opening-day number alone.

That is 72% of the entire estimated board, against 14% for all five new releases put together - Rs 36 crore between them, Crazy Kalyanam included. Jailer 2 is not leading this weekend so much as absorbing it.

What it takes to reach Rs 200 crore

Rs 200 crore across four days needs opening day at Rs 64 crore or better - the top half of our Rs 54-67 band. On our central Rs 60 crore it lands at Rs 188 crore, which is close but not there. Everything in that column moves with Thursday and almost nothing else, so the day-one figure settling tonight decides the headline for the whole run.

And the run does not stop on Sunday

Dussehra falls on Tuesday 20 October - day six of Jailer 2's run, not this weekend. Every film here is positioned ahead of the holiday rather than on it, which means the Monday dip should be shallower than normal and Tuesday gets a second opening-weekend-sized day. A six-day figure to Dussehra night is the number the trade will end up quoting, and on our central call - Monday near Rs 19 crore, a Dussehra Tuesday near Rs 28 crore - it lands around Rs 235 crore.

The one nobody is watching

Hanuman Ansh is still running, and it may yet pass Drishyam

Day 70 on Friday. Rs 337.08 crore India net through day 67 - Tuesday 13 October, the last day our daily chart has settled - on a reported Rs 2 crore budget, with Rs 437.88 crore worldwide gross. It has been taking over a crore a day for weeks.

Something strange happened in week 10. On the headline it rose 19.5% on week 9's daily average, which at day 70 is close to unheard of. But split it by language and the Hindi original is running Rs 0.87 crore a day - down 42.5% on its own week 9, a perfectly ordinary fall. The entire rise is a Telugu version that released on 9 October - day 63, the last day of week 9 - so week 10 is the first full week it has been in cinemas. The dub is already out-earning the original.

Hanuman AnshDrishyam: The Conclusion
Where it isRs 337.08 Cr, day 67Rs 313.85 Cr, day 12
WorldwideRs 437.88 CrRs 500+ Cr
Our lifetime callRs 356-369 CrRs 375-395 Cr
Gap on the bands—Rs 6 Cr to Drishyam
India net, both read to Tuesday 13 October so they are directly comparable. Drishyam is on the Box Office India series our daily chart runs on; Sacnilk has it about Rs 6 crore higher, so do not quote the two against each other. Hanuman Ansh is Sacnilk-basis, the highest of our three sources on this film - Bollywood Hungama has it at Rs 322.10 Cr and Box Office India has not published it since 12 September.

So on our published bands Drishyam finishes ahead - but the bands very nearly touch. The bottom of Drishyam's range sits just Rs 6 crore above the top of Hanuman Ansh's. Hanuman Ansh needs about Rs 13 crore more than our central call to draw level with the bottom of Drishyam's.

That is an outside chance rather than a likely one, and it would need two things at once: Drishyam's third weekend collapsing under this slate, and the Telugu dub holding into November. But it is a live enough possibility to be worth saying out loud, and the crossover condition is simple enough to watch week by week.

What we are not claiming

We withdrew the "157 times its budget" line as unverifiable and are not reintroducing a bigger version of it. The Rs 2 crore budget is a reported figure, not a filing. There is still no streaming deal; the producer has denied the Rs 100 crore figure on the record. And on worldwide, the Rs 500 crore club is out of reach - overseas is only 12.4% of its total and would have to grow by half again from here.

Ramayana: US pre-sales open this morning, and the board is still empty

North American ticket sales are reported to open today at 9:00 AM ET. We swept every US platform we can read last night and found zero bookable showtimes - which, twelve hours early, is the correct answer rather than a worrying one.

PlatformRelease date shownShowtimes
Fandango8 Novnone
Cinemark5 Novnone
Atom Tickets5 Novnone
IMAX4 Novnone
AMC—not fetched, robots-disallowed
Boxoffy North America sweep, 14 October. AMC is listed and deliberately never requested.

Four US ticketing sites, four different release dates, on the morning sales are supposed to open. Sony's own posters say 6 November, the producer has said 8 November for India, and the trade has reported 5 November as official. It is not settled.

Two findings from that sweep are worth carrying. The English cut has no listing anywhere - a 2h45m English version was reported weeks ago, and not one US platform we can read carries it; only the Hindi 3h15m cut is bookable. And Canada has nothing at all, not one chain.

On the trailer: the first landed 30 July and is reported to have crossed 100 crore views in five days. A second was announced as "coming soon" on 6 October and neither Prime Focus nor Namit Malhotra has put a date on it since. If it lands this weekend it lands into a Jailer 2 news cycle, which is a choice someone has had to make.

The competitive fact that matters most

Godzilla Minus Zero opens 6 November in North America with IMAX early access from 3 November, and its tickets are already on sale. It is also a "Filmed For IMAX" title. On the exact premium big-screen showtimes Ramayana's North American pitch depends on, the rival is in the building first and selling. Ramayana has no IMAX showtime listed anywhere.

India releases, 12-18 October 2026. This is a release list, not a viewership ranking - no Indian platform publishes comparable numbers, and we are not going to invent an order for them.

The one with real theatrical relevance is Enna Vilai on Netflix, landing in five languages on 15 October - the same day Jailer 2 opens, which is either bad planning or a deliberate attempt to catch the overflow.

Why there is no ranked top 10 here

We have been asked for one and we will build it the moment the inputs exist. Netflix publishes weekly hours for a global top 10 but not an India cut that matches it; JioHotstar, Prime Video and ZEE5 publish nothing comparable. Any cross-platform "top 10 in India" you see this week is an editorial guess wearing a chart's clothes. Ours would be too, so this stays a release table until we can source it properly.

Spotify India daily chart, 12 October 2026, via kworb. Movement is against the previous day.

Two things stand out. Non-film music owns the top of the chart - Barsaat, Alfaaz, Arz Kiya Hai, Khat and Bairan have no film between them. The Banjaare brothers hold first and seventh simultaneously.

And the only film track in the top ten is Gehra Hua from Dhurandhar at number nine, a film from March. Drishyam: The Conclusion, a film past Rs 310 crore, is charting nowhere on Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Music or JioSaavn - its album is four tracks and under fifteen minutes.

The counter-example is Hanuman Ansh, whose soundtrack has passed 100 million streams. Parvati sits at number two on YouTube in India and number two on JioSaavn's Hindi chart while not appearing in Spotify's top fifteen at all, which is a useful reminder that a single platform is not the market.

Jailer 2's Anirudh soundtrack is the obvious thing to watch from Friday. We have no chart position for it yet and are not going to guess one.

Boxoffice Pro long-range and weekend forecasts, 16-18 October 2026. Projections, not results.

The holdover to watch is Other Mommy. It opened to $27.8M against a $17-22M forecast, then took a D+ from CinemaScore, which polls the opening-night crowd, and the low end of this weekend's range would be a drop of more than 60%. That is the shape of a film whose opening outran its word of mouth.

For the Indian slate in America, Jailer 2's North American day-one advance was $1.2M, of which the USA alone was $965K. That is a strong number for a Tamil release and it will not trouble the domestic top five - the all-time North American opening record for an Indian film is Baahubali 2's $10.43M, and the highest-grossing Indian film ever in that market, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, did $28.6M across its entire run.

How to read this

What is measured, what is modelled, and what we will grade

Advance figures are gross and come from Sacnilk unless named otherwise. Collections are India net. Our own sweeps are named as ours. Every projection in this piece is modelled and labelled, and the weekend chart is an estimate in full - not a tracker read.

Two corrections carried into this piece. Our District sweeps were filtering on a UTC timestamp while treating it as local, which silently discarded every show before 05:30 IST - the early-morning block that matters most on a Tamil opening day. That is fixed, and any District figure we published before 15 October is a floor. Separately, we described two bad venues as 15% of Prahaar's tickets; the correct figure for those two is 13%.

What grades on Monday

  • Jailer 2's opening day against our Rs 60 crore call, band Rs 54-67
  • The weekend chart above against the actuals, row by row
  • Prahaar against Rs 2.5 crore and Nayi Naveli against Rs 3.5 crore
  • Whether Ranabaali's 87% block-seat advance turned into real attendance
  • Drishyam's third weekend against our Rs 10.5 crore estimate, which is what decides whether its lifetime range needs cutting again
  • Whether Ramayana's US showtimes actually appeared at 9:00 AM ET

Questions

Frequently asked

How much did Jailer 2 earn in advance booking?

Jailer 2 closed its day-one advance at Rs 41.48 crore gross in India, including block seats, or Rs 37.60 crore excluding them. That is 19.6 lakh tickets across 17,615 shows in 2,742 cinemas. Worldwide day-one pre-sales passed Rs 60 crore gross.

What is Jailer 2's opening day prediction?

Boxoffy is calling Rs 60 crore India net for opening day across all languages, with a band of Rs 54 to 67 crore. For comparison, the first Jailer opened to Rs 48.35 crore and Coolie to Rs 65 crore.

Which films are releasing before Dussehra 2026?

Jailer 2 opened on 15 October. Ranabaali, Nayi Naveli, Prahaar: The Untold Story of Ujjwal Nikam and Crazy Kalyanam all release on 16 October, with Garividi Lakshmi on 17 October. Dussehra itself falls on Tuesday 20 October, so these are positioned in the run-up to the holiday rather than on it.

How much will Jailer 2 make in its opening weekend?

Boxoffy estimates Rs 188 crore India net across the extended Thursday-to-Sunday opening weekend, with a band of Rs 169 to 210 crore. Reaching Rs 200 crore over four days would need opening day at about Rs 64 crore.

Will Hanuman Ansh beat Drishyam: The Conclusion?

On current projections Drishyam finishes ahead. Boxoffy's lifetime range for Hanuman Ansh is Rs 356-369 crore and for Drishyam Rs 375-395 crore, a gap of about Rs 6 crore between the bands. It would take a weak third weekend for Drishyam and a strong Telugu run for Hanuman Ansh to flip it.

When is Ramayana releasing and when do US tickets go on sale?

US advance bookings are reported to open at 9:00 AM ET on 15 October 2026. The release date is not settled: IMAX lists 4 November, Cinemark and Atom list 5 November, Sony's posters say 6 November and Fandango shows 8 November.
