Ramayana opened like an event. Now comes the Diwali weekend.
North America preview night counted seat by seat at about 1.05 lakh admits and ~$2.1M, India’s day-one advance closed at Rs 50.08 crore, and worldwide presales finished at $18 million. Here is where the weekend lands, what the trackers and Sony are saying, our India and US charts, plus OTT and music.

Seven things worth knowing before Friday
- North America preview night: about 1.05 lakh admits and ~$2.1M. We saw 96,828 admits on seat maps across 2,910 shows; adding the last-minute buyers our reads miss takes it to roughly 1.05 lakh. That puts Ramayana level with or past Dhurandhar 2’s $2.0M Hindi preview record - official number Thursday morning.
- Walk-ups were real. US shows came in 26% above their midnight presales; shows we read in their final 30 minutes ran +40%; late shows (9 PM and after) ran +81%.
- India’s day-one advance closed at Rs 50.08 crore gross (14.05 lakh tickets, 26,615 shows; Rs 42.96 crore without block seats).
- Our India day-one call: Rs 78 crore net (band Rs 68-88 crore), the same model that called Drishyam within 1.6%. The final advance came in above our estimate, so the model now reads Rs 82-85 crore - we log both.
- Worldwide presales closed at 33 lakh tickets and $18.04 million.
- Weekend, North America: our pace says ~$11-14M for Wednesday to Sunday, with Friday-Sunday around $9M and a #3 finish behind Godzilla Minus Zero and The Cat in the Hat. That is below the $12-16M some trackers posted and well above the studio’s cautious $6M four-day guidance.
- India, Friday-Sunday: we model Ramayana at about Rs 155 crore net (Rs 135-180 crore) across Dhanteras and Diwali, for a four-day start near Rs 235 crore.
Every big Indian opening in North America, cleared before the first show
Our tracker counts every Fandango cinema in the US and the main Canadian chains seat by seat. At the midnight close on 3 November, Ramayana had 70,075 US preview tickets on its own, and every benchmark below was already behind it.
| Film | How it opened | NA opening | Premiere mark (tickets) | Ramayana |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Animal | Fri-Sun | $6.52M | 24,555 | ✓ Passed |
| Jawan | Thu-Sun | $7.50M | 28,212 | ✓ Passed |
| Pushpa 2 | Thu-Sun incl. Wed premieres | $9.30M | 35,000 | ✓ Passed |
| Pathaan | Wed-Sun | $9.49M | 35,716 | ✓ Passed |
| RRR | Fri-Sun (estimate) | $9.50M | 35,753 | ✓ Passed |
| Baahubali 2 | Fri-Sun | $10.43M | 39,255 | ✓ Passed |
| Kalki 2898 AD | Wed-Sun incl. previews | $10.83M | 40,768 | ✓ Passed |
| Dhurandhar 2 | Wed-Sun incl. premiere | $14.00M | 52,688 | ✓ Passed |
Two caveats we will not hide. Kalki 2898 AD still sold more premiere tickets - 95,685 on its final US read against Ramayana’s 70,075 - and at Telugu premiere prices. And Ramayana’s audience is wider and thinner: it leans to AMC and the coasts (AMC 32,922 tickets vs Kalki’s 19,065), where Kalki sold most of its premiere at Cinemark in Texas.
Presales at the close, worldwide
| Market | Tickets | Gross |
|---|---|---|
| North America (all dates) | 271,383 | $4.98M |
| India, day one (Sacnilk final, 6 AM IST) | 14.05 lakh | Rs 50.08 Cr ($5.26M) |
| India, days 2-4 (Fri-Sun, 8 PM IST 4 Nov) | 15.61 lakh | Rs 57.19 Cr |
| Worldwide, all markets | 33.4 lakh | $18.04M |
What actually happened on Wednesday night
| Admits | Gross | |
|---|---|---|
| US, every Fandango cinema (2,689 shows) | 86,794 seen · ~96,000 with last-minute buyers | ~$2.0M |
| US, cinemas not on Fandango | ~350 | ~$7K |
| Canada (Cineplex, Landmark, independents) | 9,684 seen · ~10,300 | ~$0.13M |
| North America (2,910 shows) | 96,828 seen · ~1.05 lakh | ~$2.1M |
- IMAX carried the night: 43.8% of admits and half the gross from 371 shows.
- Fullest big cities: SF Bay Area 34%, Dallas-Fort Worth 30%, Boston 28.5%, New York/New Jersey 25.5%.
- Biggest walk-up jumps: Tennessee and San Antonio +55%, Fresno +52%, Ohio +35%.
- Biggest by admits: New York/New Jersey 11,127, SF Bay Area 6,710, Dallas-Fort Worth 6,673, Los Angeles 5,576, Chicago 4,964.
Thursday’s opening day had about 39,000-40,000 North American tickets booked by Wednesday night. We expect it to finish near 60,000 admits and ~$1.1M, which puts previews plus Thursday at about $3.1-3.3M. If you see a “$3M previews” headline, that is where it comes from.
What the trackers, the studio and our seats say
| Source | Figure | Window |
|---|---|---|
| Box Office Theory (Shawn Robbins) | $12-16M | Wed-Sat |
| Todd Thatcher | $11.9M · $17.1M | Fri-Sun · Thu-Sun |
| Studio tracking (Sony, reported by Variety) | ~$6M | first four days |
| Boxoffy pace | ~$9M Fri-Sun · ~$11-14M Wed-Sun | North America |
Why we are below the trackers. The presale trajectory on our tracker - $18.6M for five days - assumed presales would multiply about 4.9 times by Sunday. Preview night multiplied 1.37 times. Preview night is always the most pre-booked day, so the weekend will multiply more, but reaching $18M would need the weekend to finish about 8.5 times its midnight presale. Our pace has Friday to Sunday at three to five times, which is a $7-10M weekend.
Why the studio is lower than everyone. Studios guide low before an opening so the headline beats expectations. Sony’s ~$6M for four days was set before presales went past every Indian benchmark; previews and Thursday alone should reach about $3.2M.
The Diwali problem. Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November. Lakshmi Puja evening is one of the quietest nights of the year in cinemas in India and among the diaspora, so Sunday will dip - and Monday and Tuesday (Govardhan Puja, Bhai Dooj) should recover.
Our India top 10 for 6-8 November
| # | Film | Language | Week | Fri-Sun (net) | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ramayana: Part 1 | Hindi + 4 dubs | 1 | Rs 155 Cr (135-180) | Dhanteras Friday, Diwali Sunday; four days ~Rs 235 Cr |
| 2 | Aadarsha Kutumbam House No: 47 (AK 47) | Telugu | 2 | Rs 12 Cr | Opened Rs 31.40 Cr; loses screens to Ramayana |
| 3 | Jailer 2 | Tamil | 4 | Rs 9 Cr | Rs 456 Cr so far; Tamil Diwali openers split Tamil Nadu |
| 4 | Mookuthi Amman 2 | Tamil | 1 | Rs 6-12 Cr | Nayanthara, Sundar C; new Diwali release |
| 5 | Udta Teer | Hindi | 3 | Rs 3.5 Cr | Rs 42.10 Cr so far |
| 6 | Appa Kutty | Tamil | 1 | Rs 2-4 Cr | Vijay Antony family drama |
| 7 | Moon Walk | Tamil | 1 | Rs 2-4 Cr | Prabhudheva, A. R. Rahman |
| 8 | Premada Oorali | Kannada | 7 | Rs 1.8 Cr | Rs 110.82 Cr so far |
| 9 | Drishyam: The Conclusion | Hindi | 6 | Rs 1.5 Cr | Rs 377.35 Cr so far |
The interesting race is underneath Ramayana. AK 47 opened to Rs 31.40 crore and holds the Telugu states, where Ramayana’s dubbed version has the smallest share of its advance; a second weekend above Rs 12 crore would mark it as a real hit. Jailer 2 is chasing Rs 470 crore in India; three Tamil Diwali releases make that a slow walk.

Diwali week on streaming is quiet by design - the platforms do not want to open against Ramayana. The two Hindi titles with a theatrical audience behind them are Obsession on JioHotstar and Meethe Mein Kya Hai on Netflix.
Ramayana’s album: talked about more than streamed, so far
A. R. Rahman’s soundtrack is out on Spotify as an EP. Its centrepiece, Mangal Rang - the Ram-Sita wedding song, sung by Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal with lyrics by Kumar Vishwas - landed on 25 October and started an argument: some listeners say its qawwali shape does not suit the epic; others point to Kun Faya Kun and defend Rahman’s right to experiment. Rahman’s answer was that scoring Ramayana was “an honour and a responsibility.”
What we can say: no Ramayana track is in the published national top 10s we track yet. That is normal for a devotional epic before release - album streams usually follow the film, not lead it. We will report Spotify, YouTube and JioSaavn positions in Monday’s recap rather than guess them now.
What is measured, what is modelled, and what we will grade
North America is counted: every Fandango cinema in the US, Cineplex and Landmark in Canada, read seat by seat, with the small chains we cannot read estimated and labelled. India advance figures are gross from Sacnilk plus our District scan (BCM12); collections are India net. Every chart in this piece is a forecast.
What grades on Monday
- North America preview night against ~$2.1M (official number Thursday morning)
- India day one against Rs 78 crore net (model now Rs 82-85 crore)
- Ramayana North America Wed-Sun against ~$11-14M, and Fri-Sun against ~$9M
