Where the board stands, Wednesday night.
Six days of the Independence Day cycle, finalised. Actuals, not projections — the last full day before the board resets.
Most of the coverage has picked the wrong comparison. "Emraan beat Sunny" is true and mostly uninteresting. Both films opened into the same holiday, on the same screens, in the same week. What matters is the shape of each film's own curve, and only one of them has a healthy one.
Why Batwara 1947 didn't work.
August 15, 2026 fell on a Saturday. That is the most important fact about this release and the one almost no coverage has priced in.
A Partition drama opening the Friday before an Independence Day Saturday isn't bought the way films are normally bought. The audience doesn't have to want this film. It has to want a film, that day. Our advance work flagged this case before release: when Aug 15 lands on a weekend, a patriotic title's event day shifts to Day 2 and the advance underindexes it. The model handles the opening fine. What it can't tell you is whether the spike converts into anything.
The arithmetic
A Hindi release with ordinary word-of-mouth moves Friday to Saturday at roughly 1.35–1.50×. Take the midpoint, 1.42×, as the counterfactual — Batwara's Saturday with no holiday attached.
Three tells, in order of severity
One: Sunday failed a normal Sunday test. Day 3 came in at ₹7.25 Cr — 1.26× the Friday, against 1.55–1.70× for a healthy Hindi release. Batwara's first non-holiday day underperformed a standard Sunday off its own opening. The curve was already negative before the working week began.
Two: Monday dropped 72%. Sunday-to-Monday for a functioning film is −55% to −65%. This sits outside the band entirely.
Three: no weekday base formed. Days 4–6 delivered ₹5.65 Cr — ₹1.88 Cr a day against a ₹5.75 Cr opening, a ratio of 0.33 where legs hold 0.45–0.60. Awarapan 2 runs 0.39 on a far larger base, and its Tuesday came in above its Monday.
The genre point
Here is the uncomfortable version: the Partition drama has never had a commercial baseline in Hindi cinema. Gadar gets cited as proof it does. Gadar was a spike driven by Sunny Deol's screen persona at one very specific moment, and nothing around it before or since has established a floor.
Quality isn't the missing variable either. Main Vaapas Aaunga carried an 8.1 IMDb score and still finished below break-even. When a genre's best-reviewed films underperform alongside its worst, execution has stopped being the explanation. The audience for the subject is just smaller than the industry keeps assuming, and it gets mistaken for the audience for a star. Batwara 1947 had Rahman, Santosh Sivan, Santoshi, Aamir Khan Productions and Sunny Deol. When a package that strong can't hold a Monday, the problem sits upstream of the film.
The weekend ahead — Boxoffy Top 10, Aug 21–23.
Two arrivals reshape the board. Khalifa — Vysakh's two-part Malayalam crime franchise with Prithviraj Sukumaran and an extended Mohanlal role — opened Thursday. Irumudi — Ravi Teja, Shiva Nirvana directing for Mythri — lands Friday in Telugu. Everything below them is a holdover in decay.

Where we've widened, and why. Our last two India calls both missed low: Awarapan 2's opening by 30%, Spider-Man's second weekend by 35–40%. Those decay assumptions were fitted on pre-2025 behaviour and 2026 audiences are holding better than that. So every band above has been pushed upward, and we're now treating the historical curve as a floor rather than a starting point. If we miss low a third time this weekend, that stops being bad luck and becomes a broken model.
Toxic: the advance opens Friday, and the US number just moved.
Yash's Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups releases August 26 across a reported 12,000-screen global rollout in Kannada, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and English, with Lionsgate handling the English version internationally. India advance opens Friday, August 21 — five days out, which is a tight window for a film of this scale and worth watching on its own.
We're raising our Toxic call.
At T-15 Toxic sat at $46K and ranked last of seven comparable pan-Indian launches. It now carries 5,550+ tickets across 204 locations and 589 shows per Venky Box Office, with BookMyShow interest past a million — the thirteenth Indian film there. Dhurandhar 2 ran the same shape, $34K at T-17 to $1.07M at T-5 as chains opened windows. Toxic is on that curve, later.
The ATP is still the problem. Gross over tickets puts Toxic at $21.85 a seat against a field running $28–31. That says the sales are coming through the Telugu dub rather than premium formats, the same pattern Vishwanath & Sons showed. Expect ticket volume to read stronger than dollars all week.
Revised North America call
What moves it
One correction worth making out loud. At least one national outlet has run the headline "$1.2 Million" over a body figure of $121,258. That is a decimal point, ten-folded. The rupee conversions circulating alongside it (₹1.14 Cr) reconcile with $121K and nowhere near $1.2M. If you see the bigger number this week, it is a typo with a life of its own.
The US weekend: Spider-Man goes for four.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is chasing a fourth consecutive number one. It led last weekend with $70.7M across 4,539 sites — a 51% hold — crossed $803.9M domestic on Tuesday as the fastest film ever to $800M, passed $2B worldwide, and overtook No Way Home to become the highest-grossing Spider-Man ever. The market ran $150.18M across the Week 33 top ten, up 82% on the same frame in 2025, and is now eighteen straight $100M+ weekends deep — a streak last seen in summer 2023.

Where we differ. The consensus floor on Spider-Man is $30M — a 58% drop. Nothing in four weeks supports that; its legs are the whole story of the run, and its Week 3 hold was 51% against a far tougher comparison. We put the band at 45–52% off, or $34–39M, and call $36M. On Insidious, the franchise ladder reads $40.27M (Chapter 2), $33M (Red Door), $29.58M (Last Key), $22.69M (Chapter 3). A sixth entry three years on, carrying 55% on Rotten Tomatoes, lands nearer the bottom of that ladder than the middle: $24M, under the street midpoint.
Third place is where the consensus contradicts itself. The street puts The Odyssey third and leaves PAW Patrol outside the top three. But PAW Patrol carries 10% of national showtime share against The Odyssey's 6%, and opened last weekend at $20.5M against $23.2M. A film with nearly double the showtimes of the one ranked above it doesn't usually finish behind it. We have them at $13.5M and $13M, which is a coin toss, and we'd rather say so than invent a gap. The variable is back-to-school: it has started in enough of the country to start cutting family matinees.
The Odyssey is the quiet achievement of the summer: $508.78M domestic and $1.316B worldwide in six weeks, now tracking toward Barbie's $1.447B. Three hours of Homer, and it is out-legging most of the tentpoles it opened against.
Off the big screen: OTT & the music desk.
The July and early-August crop starts its digital second life this week — and one title comes off the national chart entirely.
The through-line. Awarapan 2's jukebox worked because the 2007 soundtrack had spent eighteen years building an audience the sequel could walk in and collect. Batwara had no such deposit to draw on. Music converts when it arrives second.
On the horizon.
Next Wednesday is the whole story. Toxic opens Aug 26 into a board where Awarapan 2 is a fortnight old and everything else is in tail. It takes screens from Batwara 1947 first, which effectively ends that run somewhere around ₹45–50 Cr net India, then from Khalifa and Irumudi.
Beyond that the road bends to Diwali and Ramayana: Part One on Nov 6. Standing note holds: Nov 6 is Dhanteras, Nov 8 the softest evening of the festival, so the three-day will understate it. Judge Ramayana on five days to Bhai Dooj.
