This is a Spider-Man weekend, and it isn't close.
Brand New Day swung into Indian cinemas on Thursday and immediately rewrote the Hollywood record book, tracking to the biggest opening day a non-Indian film has ever had here. Everything else this weekend is playing for second place. The good news for the holdovers is that Spider-Man's audience and theirs barely overlap. Nolan's Odyssey has its premium-format loyalists, Jana Nayagan has Vijay's Tamil base, and the family and South-language films keep ticking along underneath the web-slinger's shadow. The holdovers are holding well: Odyssey is still pulling ₹18–24 Cr in its third weekend on IMAX legs, Jana Nayagan crossed ₹175 Cr net and stays the South's anchor, and Dhamaal 4 has quietly banked ₹155 Cr net across four weeks. None of them are being killed by Spider-Man; they're just sharing a very crowded marquee.
Spider-Man: the records in reach.
We won't over-analyse a film this obviously huge. The story is simply which records fall. Here's the ladder, all of them held by Avengers: Endgame, the benchmark for Hollywood in India:
- Biggest opening day — Endgame's ₹53.10 Cr net (2019). Brand New Day is tracking ₹55–60 Cr on Day 1, and looks set to take it.
- Biggest opening weekend — Endgame's ₹157 Cr net over three days. A ₹55–plus Thursday puts this within range by Sunday.
- Biggest opening week — beating Endgame's ₹315 Cr gross first week.
- Highest-grossing Hollywood film ever in India — past Avatar: The Way of Water's ₹477.50 Cr gross lifetime.
- First ₹500 Cr Hollywood film in India — a club no non-Indian film has ever entered.
The first two are near-certain to fall this weekend. The last two are lifetime targets that depend on how the film holds through August, but the fact that they're even on the table tells you the scale of what's happening. Globally, the picture rhymes: our BCM reads a ~$135M US opening day and a ~$285–295M weekend, with a worldwide bow near $640M, second only to Endgame's all-time $1.223B. China, which No Way Home never had, opened at Endgame-era pace.

One film is doing more this weekend than the next nine combined, which is exactly what a record-breaking Hollywood opening looks like. Watch the gap between Spider-Man and the field close only when the South's next big release lands; until then, this is a solo show on top.
On the horizon: Ramayana and Batwara.
Two very different films are shaping the road ahead. Ramayana — the ₹4,000 Cr, two-part epic with Ranbir Kapoor, Yash and Sai Pallavi — counts down to a Diwali release on Nov 8, now carrying Sony Pictures for international distribution and the tag of the first Indian film to be “Filmed for IMAX.” Our early read has it opening in the ₹175–215 Cr net range in India. If Spider-Man is this weekend's event, Ramayana is the year's.
Sooner than that, the Batwara 1947 trailer is landing ahead of its Aug 14 release. It stars Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta in a Rajkumar Santoshi partition drama, produced by Aamir Khan Productions with an A.R. Rahman score. It opens Independence Day weekend against Emraan Hashmi's Awarapan 2, and the trailer is the first real look at whether Santoshi has another Gadar-sized swing in him. We'll have the full Hype Index read once it's out.
