The Arc

Four Careers in One

Few Indian stars have reinvented themselves as often — or lasted as long — as Ajay Devgn.

The intense action hero (1991–2005). A record-setting split-bike entry in Phool Aur Kaante launched a decade of action and romance, punctuated by two National Awards (Zakhm, The Legend of Bhagat Singh) that proved the range beneath the glare.

The commercial king (2006–2019). Golmaal unlocked comedy; Singham unlocked the franchise era. Across Golmaal, Singham, Bol Bachchan and Total Dhamaal, Devgn became one of Bollywood's most bankable mass draws — a run of ₹100 Cr+ hits that few peers matched.

The late-career peak (2020). Tanhaji remains his summit — ₹279.4 Cr net, ₹367 Cr worldwide, and 2.22 crore tickets sold, his biggest gross and biggest footfall in the same film.

The volatile 2020s. A genuine paradox: he crossed ₹1,000 Cr net in India post-COVID — more than almost anyone — yet at barely a 30% success rate, as budget-heavy swings like Singham Again, Maidaan and Son of Sardaar 2 grossed big or bled while Drishyam 2, Shaitaan and Raid 2 kept the hits coming. Dhamaal 4 (2026) is the newest chapter, and it opened his biggest of the year.

Methodology & sources. This ledger is anchored to Box Office India's verified career totals through 2020 (95 films, ₹2,892.43 Cr net, verdict distribution, and Tanhaji's 2.22 Cr footfalls) and extended with Sacnilk-verified figures for 2021–2026 (Drishyam 2 ₹240 Cr, Singham Again, Shaitaan ₹148 Cr, Raid 2 ₹177.5 Cr, Son of Sardaar 2 ₹46.82 Cr, De De Pyaar De 2 ₹74 Cr, Dhamaal 4 running). Figures marked ~ are BCM-modeled estimates for films where public per-title data is light (mostly pre-2010 releases): India net is estimated from era-scaled verdict bands, and footfalls = India net ÷ era average ticket price (₹12 in the early '90s rising to ₹130 today) — a deliberately inflation-proof metric, since a 1995 rupee and a 2025 rupee are not comparable but a ticket is a ticket. Worldwide gross is modeled from India net plus era-typical overseas multiples. Career totals reflect all ~108 lead films (including minor releases not individually tabled); cameos (RRR, Gangubai Kathiawadi, Sooryavanshi, Simmba) and the OTT release Bhuj are listed but excluded from gross/footfall totals. Verdicts follow BOI's ROI-based system. Estimates are directional; verified figures are marked. Updated July 2026.
